Ted Rall has written an excellent essay. Unfortunately, he falls into a common trap. The Jena story isn't about nooses hanging from an all-white tree, nor is it primarily about an assault at Jena High School. The Jena story is about community leaders who tacitly endorsed a symbol of hate, thereby placing black and white students on a collision course that could only end badly. Donald Washington may be a black US Attorney, but his suggestion that there is no linkage between the noose incident and the assault at the High School cannot be maintained. In fairness to Mr. Rall, I can see how he could arrive at his truncated version of the facts by skimming through the media coverage. This isn't about the kids, black or white; it's about the grown-ups. Properly understood, Jena is a perfect metaphor for precisely the kind of racism that is so eloquently described in the first half of the article. For a different spin on Jena, go to
