Alive After Five: Dave Barnes with James Orr

In stark contrast to last week's bluegrass throwdown, this week's Alive After Five will feature the light, balmy tunes of singer-songwriter Dave Barnes with local one-man-band indie whiz James Orr opening.

Dave Barnes has been writing and recording music for the better part of the last decade. Coming all the way from Kosciusko, Miss., Barnes' style of music is soft-rock R&B, with hints of folk and country. He's put out four studio albums, his most recent, What We Want, What We Get, was released in April 6 and featured the single "God Gave Me You." The song charted in the top-five on the Contemporary Christian Music charts, and was featured on the soap opera All My Children just last week. In 2008, Barnes supported Hanson on their Walk Around the World Tour.

James Orr is a local indie-rock act. His style ranges from minimalist electro-pop to singer-songwriter. He lists The National and Andrew Bird as influences. When performing live, Orr plays solo, utilizing loops and various electronic effects to create a whole band sound.

According to a blurb on Orr's Myspace page, "Layer by layer, I weave together guitars, drums, keys and vocals [...] You will be mesmerized with the seamlessness that my instruments are woven into their lyrical counterparts, resulting in a live show that is stimulating for both the eyes and the ears."
