Last year, the personal finance company SmartAsset ranked the top 10 most dog-friendly cities in the U.S., chosen for their high numbers of dog parks per capita, stocks of dog-friendly shops and restaurants, walkability and more. San Francisco; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Tucson, Arizona; were the top three. The City of Trees didn't even crack the top 25.

That said, Boiseans should take pride in the fact that this year, the Center for City Park Excellence, part of The Trust for Public Land, ranked Boise No. 1 in the nation for dog park density—with 6.7 parks per 100,000 residents, it edged out Portland, Oregon, and Henderson, Nevada.

And when it comes to dining, while you may not see too many animals inside dining rooms—with the exception of service animals, Idaho Food Code insists that live animals only be allowed in areas not used for food preparation—you'll see a good number of pet pals in bars and on patios.

Take 10 Barrel Brewing, The Lift, Juniper, Sun Ray Cafe and Highlands Hollow Brewhouse, for instance. They all welcome dogs to their patios.

Other establishments allow dogs on the patio with a few conditions. For example, Bardenay allows appropriately outfitted service dogs inside its patio, while dogs without documentation can be leashed to the outer perimeter of the patio fence. Wild Root Cafe and Market allows dogs inside the patio as long as they're well-behaved. And if you're looking to stop for a beverage or something to eat during a stroll on the Boise Greenbelt, the Sandbar has water bowls and homemade dog treats available on its patio. Bars such as The Handlebar and Meriwether Cider don't prepare or serve food, so dogs are more than welcome inside.

Not sure if your favorite patio is dog-friendly? Just call ahead.
