Army Navy, Nov. 12, Reef

A Google search for this band brings up a varied list of surplus stores and military music. Sift through the listings for camouflage clothing and groups made up of trumpeters in uniform, and you'll come across a happy little rock band whose roots include the rainy metropolis of Seattle and an affiliation with Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard. Pick up a copy of Army Navy's self-titled debut release and you'll find a catchy, addictive CD sweet enough to catch the attention of the folks responsible for the new Michael Cera film, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, which listed Army Navy's song "Silvery Sleds" on the soundtrack next to the likes of Band of Horses, Vampire Weekend and Mark Mothersbaugh.

Calling from somewhere in the American heartland, vocalist Justin Kennedy's bright singing voice (which, at times, echoes Jeremy Enigk's) is due in part, he says, to the move from the Northwest to Los Angeles. While the melancholy mood of a wet and rainy Seattle informs his music, the L.A. sunshine injects it with a dose of vitamin happy, giving the songs a jangly good-time tone.

Kennedy said that though he's been in other bands, this is his first real attempt in which he's the one responsible for the songwriting and, therefore, the band's musical direction. He said the band has been having a great time out on the road, pleasantly surprised to find fans waiting for them in most every city they play and Soundscan numbers proving someone is listening. Wednesday, Nov. 12, with The Shys and The Takeover UK, 8 p.m., $8. Reef, 125 S. Sixth St., 208-287-9200.
