Atmosphere, Sept. 15, Knitting Factory

Garfield may hate Mondays, but even he might find something to smile about next week.

The duo of Slug (Sean Daley) and Ant (Anthony Davis), aka Atmosphere, bring their cool selves and their cool hip-hop Paint The Nation Tour to Boise, on the heels of their spring release, When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold (on their Rhymesayers Entertainment label).

Together since the early '90s, the duo had been referred to in the past as "emo rap." Slug's lyrics have been almost uncomfortable in their sitting-in-a-confessional nature but also repeatedly included something missing in a lot of hip-hop: a message, a story, and it might just be Slug's eschewing of chicks and money as sole inspiration for creation that allows fans a deeper connection to the music.

As the musicians have grown up, so has their music. Lemons still squeezes out "I" references, but Slug's introspection is broadened by outside-his-own-head character development, and Ant's production embraces new techniques, making the new album a highly engaging endeavor.
