President Donald Trump has canceled raises for federal employees next year. The New York Times reports that after being rebuffed by the courts in his attempt to peel back union protections of federal workers, "Trump took aim elsewhere on Thursday: at their paychecks." Congress may still move to overturn Trump's decision.

Some Idaho DMV offices, including Ada County's, will reopen today after nearly a week of technical glitches, the eleventh time this year software has halted the issuance of Gem State driver's licenses. Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter facilitated a meeting Thursday with the Idaho Sheriffs' Association, the Idaho Chiefs of Police Association, Idaho State Police, the Idaho Association of Counties and the Idaho Transportation Department to help troubleshoot the DMV problem. ITD said a temporary fix will be to allow counties to "bypass" the software problems and resume issuing driver's licenses. That said, customers are being cautioned to anticipate delays as county staff adjust to system changes and a serious backlog of customers.
The National Weather Service Office in Boise has a near-perfect holiday weekend forecast for the Treasure Valley. Daytime highs in Boise will be in the upper 70s or low 80s straight through Labor Day, and overnight lows will be in the low 50s.

With the possible exception of people who operate ski resorts, no one really wants to hear about winter just yet, but the just-released 2019 Farmer's Almanac says the nation's midsection can expect "teeth-chattering" cold this year. The publication also says that Idaho and most of the Pacific Northwest can expect a "typical winter" with plenty of precipitation. "We stand by our forecast and formula, which accurately predicted the many storms last winter, as well as this summer's steamy, hot conditions, said editor Peter Geiger.
But who wants to talk about winter when there's college football to watch? The Boise State Broncos open another season tomorrow when they'll visit Alabama to take on Troy University. The game will kick off at 4 p.m. Mountain Time and will be televised on ESPNews. The University of Idaho Vandals also begin their season on Saturday, Sept. 1. They're traveling to California to take on Fresno State.
