From its position high above the foothills, Bogus Basin looks down on the City of Boise like a proud parent—and for years, Boiseans have beamed right back. Considered Boise's very own ski resort at just 16.5 miles out of town, Bogus sees tens of thousands of visitors each year, particularly now that summer innovations like live music, hiking and biking trails, and even a roller coaster have made it a year-round attraction. Still, winter is when Bogus is most beloved, as skiers, snowboarders and tubers pack their trucks with gear to take advantage of its 91 named runs and 37,000 groomed Nordic trails. The resort gets 200-250 inches of natural snow each year, then tops it off with powder from its own snowmaking machines. As if all that weren't enough to earn the ski hill Lifetime Achievement status, Bogus is also a nonprofit that has operated under an all-volunteer board since 1942. As long as Boiseans can still climb mountains, Bogus' spot in their hearts (and on this list) is safe.

The Flicks

During one of Boise Weekly's countless visits to The Flicks one Saturday evening, we chatted up a few of the hundreds of customers who streamed through the door to share a glass of wine or beer, order some mouth-watering food (on that particular evening, homemade pasta e fagioli was simmering on the stove) and settle down for a screening of an Oscar-caliber film.

"If you love movies, you love The Flicks," one patron told us. "Actually, there are other movie theaters closer to where we live, but look at us. We're all settled in with a glass of wine and a fabulous film. It's all... well, it's a lovely way to spend an evening, isn't it?"

And there you have Exhibit A of why voters have, for every year we've had a Best of Boise competition, chosen The Flicks as the best of the best when it comes to cinema entertainment. We also unabashedly adore owner Carole Skinner and her amazing staff and volunteers, who make an evening at The Flicks such a pleasure.

If there was an Oscar for Best Cinema, The Flicks would most assuredly take home a gold statue.

Hannifin's

In 2008, Boise Weekly wrote about Hannifin's as it celebrated its 100th year on the corner of Main and 11th streets. Now, 11 years later, the cigar store is still quietly puffing away, enthroned forever as Boise's Best Smoke shop. Of course, it's not nearly as cynical as that: Since its opening, Hannifin's has prided itself on offering the Treasure Valley's best selection of cigars, cigarettes and pipe tobacco, with more than 100 different brands on its shelves. Step inside, and it's as if the clocks have been turned back to the era when Grease was happening, and smoking was still what the cool kids did. "It makes me feel good that there's a lot of history and a lot of people love coming here and seeing that it exists," Robert Guerrero, the shop's then-new owner, said back in '08. "And though some things have changed, many things have not." As cigars and cigarettes are increasingly beset be e-cigarettes, and those in turn face tightening restrictions from lawmakers, Hannifin's remains a smoker's port in the storm.

The Record Exchange

Opened in 1977, The Record Exchange is a true Boise original and a beacon to music lovers everywhere. It is also currently the largest store of its kind in Idaho, and an increasingly rare bird: an independent record store. That last bit is a real point of pride for the folks who work there, and for its customers. The RX helped establish and keep the tradition of Independent Record Store Day, which just celebrated its 12th-annual event, and it has been a staunch ally of music institutions like Treefort Music Fest, regularly hosting in-store live performances, album release parties. Its knowledge and stock of local recording artists is unparalleled. Since the inception of the Best of Boise contest, The RX has owned its orbit in the Best Record Store category, ultimately earning its place among the Lifetime Achievement award-winners.
