Boise Emcee Exit Prose Drops New Album

Thursday, Nov. 17 at Reef

Boise's Timbuk 2 is no rookie on the mic. Formerly with Kamphire Kollective, Timbuk 2 is now all about a new solo project, Exit Prose, and just released a new full-length, Sensational Woes.

His rap substitutes Motown samples for folk, funk bass lines and twanging guitar. "Never Stop My Flow" has a beat along that vein, topped by rhymes dripping with attitude. Piano is layered beneath "Life in the Full," funky sax on "I Try So Hard," and one expects the West Coast whistle to pop up on the venomous "Oleander."

Exit Prose's raps channel A Tribe Called Quest, but he does them one better by crafting far richer beats. He adds a political message, using "Money" like a hip-hop homage to the classic Pink Floyd song, sampling Gordon Gekko from the 1987 film Wall Street amid record scratches; it's a track about the ills of cash.
