Boise Receives 'Silver' Bicycle Friendliness Rating from League of American Bicyclists

For the first time, the League of American Bicyclists has awarded Boise "silver" status as a bicycle-friendly city.

The ranking is based on how cities and communities rate based on enforcement of bicycle-friendly laws, rider education, "engineering" safe places to ride, evaluating rider experiences, encouraging bicycle use and assessing "key outcomes" like ridership, crashes and fatalities.

Boise's silver status places it in the pack with fellow silver newcomer Ellensburg, Wash. Louisville, Ky.; Beaverton, Ore.; and Sedona, Ariz.; all moved up from bronze to silver status.

Factors contributing to Boise's gaining the silver include increased bike lane access, converting some one-way streets downtown to two-way streets—slowing car traffic in the process—and the rollout of rideshare program Boise GreenBike

Boise City leaders have long seen improving bicycle access as part of the city's ongoing livability initiative, and in a statement released Monday, June 15, Boise Mayor Dave Bieter remarked on the League of American Bicyclists' recognition.

"This award validates our efforts and shows that being bicycle-friendly is an important element of making Boise the most livable city in the country," he said.
