Boise State University Bronco David Lucero was behind bars at the Ada County Jail Tuesday afternoon after Boise police arrested the 19-year-old freshman on a felony charge of attempted strangulation.

BPD officers responded to a call of a fight in progress at a residence near the intersection of South Shoshone Street and Cherry Lane in the late night hours of Nov. 16. That's where witnesses told police an adult male and female had been arguing when the incident "turned physical."

Boise police took Lucero into custody Tuesday morning and booked him into the Ada County Jail on a charge of attempted strangulation. Lucero was scheduled to appear in Ada County Court on Wednesday, November 18. A conviction of attempted strangulation carries a possible prison sentence of 15 years.

Lucero is a red shirt freshman—his second year at the university—for the Boise State football team, playing the position of tight end. The native of Holtville, Calif., has had limited play for the Broncos, with a total of 63 yards from four catches for the current 2015 season.

Officials at Boise State said late Tuesday that Lucero had been suspended from the football team.
