Boise's Grove Plaza Should Be Packed Feb. 15 For Tower Opening, Undie Run and Hockey Game

In all, organizers of the Eighth and Main tower celebration are expecting anywhere from 10,000-15,000 people to come through the Grove that day.

When the city of Boise's Special Events Committee convenes Wednesday, Jan. 22, it will look to the future and the past in considering two high-profile events in Boise's downtown core.

In what it calls its "after event review," the committee will be briefed on New Year's Eve's Idaho Potato Drop, when a 16-foot-long steal-framed potato dropped into Grove Plaza at the stroke of midnight. Organizers, who say they'll need a lot more corporate sponsorship to make another potato drop possible, estimate that 20,000 spectators braved the cold to watch the drop.

The Special Events Committee will also be briefed on the Saturday, Feb. 15 ceremonies to celebrate the grand opening of the Eighth and Main tower.

Building developer Gardner Company says it will be hosting what it calls "a family event" through the afternoon of Feb. 15 for the public and the people who helped build Idaho's tallest structure. Beginning at noon, the events will focus on the northern half of the Grove Plaza and in the U.S. Bank Building's parking lot, which Gardner owns.

Beginning at noon, there were be craft activities, local entertainment and a food truck rally, continuing until a 6 p.m. ribbon-cutting. Immediately after the ribbon-cutting, the Goo Goo Dolls will take to the stage, with music continuing until 8 p.m.

The Grove Plaza should be pretty busy Feb. 15, since the first annual Cupid's Undie Run, with approximately 600 runners, will fill Main Street in the morning and an Idaho Steelheads hockey game will attract a few thousand more in the evening. In all, organizers of the Eighth and Main tower celebration are expecting anywhere from 10,000-15,000 people to come through the Grove that day.

To prepare for the celebration, planners will be closing off Main Street, beginning at 7 p.m. on Feb. 14 and Eighth Street through most of the day Feb. 15.
