Boise native Nick Symmonds won his sixth national title in eight years at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 28. The Bishop Kelly High School graduate thrilled fans by moving from 8th to first place in the last half of the 800 meter race, crossing the line in 1 minute 44.53 seconds

“I just said ‘If I can peak at the right time, if I can find my momentum through the rounds and be in 1:44 shape I’ll make the team,” Symmonds said after the race. “I wasn’t sure if it would win this, but it looks like it did.”

Symmonds took most of 2014 off from racing, saying he even contemplated retiring from competition.

“My body was broken. I was injured,” said the 31-year-old Symmonds. “I just thought I was too old to be running at this level.”

Instead, Symmonds entered a new partnership with Brooks Sports, moved to Seattle, and literally got back on track
Symmonds was part of Team U.S.A. in the last two Summer Olympic games, and has a silver medal from the 2013 World Championships. Now, Symmonds says he has his eye on the medal stand at this summer’s World Championships in Beijing, China.

Also at the USATF outdoor championship at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field, recent Boise State graduate Emma Bates finished 11th in her 10,000 meter run.

Bates completed her collegiate career as a 12-time All-American, and the NCAA champion in the 10k as a junior, a title she wasn’t able to defend this year.

Bates is currently talking with coaches and sponsors and is expected to announce her future plans soon.
