Brett Dennen

Mar. 6, Bourbon St.

Some things come easily to some people. Whether it's a gift, practice or a combination of nature and nurture, it's always impressive to meet people who are really good at what they do, such as singer/songwriter Brett Dennen.

Dennen is a tall guy with a gorgeous mop of red hair, whose music is as welcoming and comfortable as a favorite pair of jeans. Dennen came through last year with the Hotel Cafe Tour, where his performance was one of the highlights of the night. He's now out again, bringing his music to the masses with the Love Speaks Tour.

Over the phone, Boise Weekly asked Dennen about his busy, busy schedule (

Boise Weekly: You have three dates at SXSW. Did you play there last year?

Brett Dennen: "Yeah, but we just had one show last year. One of [the shows this year] is private and not open to the public, one is a nighttime gig and one is a daytime gig. It's worth it to do as many as you can there because you might be playing but, at the same time, Herbie Hancock or Neil Young might be playing, too. People are going to be like, "Hmmm. Brett Dennen or Herbie Hancock? Oh, I can see [Dennen} tomorrow."

Are you doing any other festivals?

"We're playing Bonnaroo, we're playing High Sierra and the Joshua Tree music festival in California, the Folk Fest in Kansas."

Wow. So is this a pretty intense tour for you?

"Yeah. Yeah. It's a pretty rough schedule. It's a lot of work. It's a lot of driving, little sleep and a lot of loading and unloading and playing. We do it every day. I mean, it's amazing that I'm doing what I love to do, but it is a lot of work. Except when [I'm] playing. When [I'm] playing on stage, there's nothing hard about it."

With his crazy schedule, it's hard to say when Dennen might make it back through these parts, so take this opportunity to see a master at work.
