Brew School and Seasonal Supper

Learn how to microbrew; State and Lemp finishes seasonal supper club

So you already know the beery basics: Malted grains, hops, yeast and water yields beer. Now it’s time to learn how to combine those ingredients properly to make your own brews. And that’s exactly what Learn to Homebrew Day is all about. On Saturday, Nov. 1, Garden City’s HomeBrewStuff Craft Bottle Shop and Taproom is celebrating the holiday with a party that runs from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at 9165 W. Chinden Blvd.

Upstart breweries like Bear Island Brewing Company and Powderhaus Brewing will be on site pouring samples of their beers while homebrewers cook up malty magic in the parking lot. Steve Koonce, author of Idaho Beer: From Grain to Glass in the Gem State, will be on hand to sign books and all local beers will cost $2.50 a pint. In addition, there will be a food truck, a bounce house and a Scratch and Dent sale featuring cosmetically damaged homebrew equipment at reduced prices.

Also on Saturday, Nov. 1, State & Lemp is hosting its final sold-out Saturday Night Supper Club of the season until the reduced-price seating is reinstated in mid-February. According to co-owner Remi Mcmanus, winter is the prix-fixe restaurant’s busiest time.

“The supper club will always only be seasonal,” said Mcmanus. “Since we’re getting into the holiday season, since the time change is hitting, we’re going back to the two full seatings. So Friday and Saturday, we’ll do the full menu, real meal deal 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. and we’ll run that through until Valentine’s Day. The week after Valentine’s Day, we’ll go back to Saturday Night Supper Club.”
