A hard landing!

Several local players did well in the Twin Falls tournament in April. Charlotte Miller and Doug Bullock won the Friday evening pairs and were second in the Sunday Swiss teams. Leslie Muir and husband Art Crawford, who only recently started playing duplicate bridge, came in fourth in the A strat of the Friday afternoon pairs and were first in the C strat. Congratulations and keep up the good play!

Charlene and I won the afternoon event with a combination of steady play and several gifts from our opponents, including the hand diagrammed above. After west opened the bidding with one notrump, showing a balanced 15 to 17 high card points, we competed to show spades and another suit. The east player bided her time, but then jumped to the optimistic level of four hearts for which my partner had a red card. In plain English, Charlene doubled four hearts and we set it three tricks for a clear top.

My choice of lessons to be gained from this hand is that we should not bid without values. East had no clear idea of the defensive value of her partner's hand and her own, with enough tricks between them to set two spades. Her leap into the blue resulted in a hard landing for their side.

Last week, we held a Sectional Tournament at the club in conjunction with many other clubs in the West, and we will report results in the next few columns.

You can experience the thrill of competition and the satisfaction of learning new skills at the Boise Bridge Club. We play six times a week and present lessons at all levels.
