Buckhorn Mountain Boys, August 11

The Buckhorn Mountain Boys are a true blue(grass) band. Based in Nampa, BMB's lineup, as with many bands, has changed numerous times in the almost 30 years since the band was founded. Their current-and final?-lineup includes founder Al Jackson on lead vocals, guitar and mandolin; Mike Bond on banjo and vocals; Donna Bond on bass and vocals and Rue Frisbee on fiddle, guitar and vocals. BMB has made several television appearances and has a show schedule that could easily give them the title "Hardest Working Band in the West."

With shows scheduled through October, you might think you'll have plenty of chances to see BMB. However, be careful. Some of their upcoming gigs are as far away as Spring City, Utah, and Battle Mountain, Nevada. BMB's own special brand of bluegrass is clearly bringing them some national acclaim and if their newest CD, One More River, is as popular as their last release, we'll be lucky to still call them a local band. Kentucky or Tennessee may decide they want BMB for themselves. Not to worry, though. They seem to have such fun playing for their devoted Idaho fans as all of their fans have watching them. They still have several shows lined up in Boise, Eagle, Caldwell and Nampa. And, according to information on their Web site, www.buckhornmountainboys.com, these guys are all about house shows. Invite a few friends (and the neighbors) over, set up a few chairs in the back yard and let BMB do their thing.

If an outdoor show sounds like the thing for you, BMB's concert on August 11 at the Idaho Botanical Garden promises to be a good one. The boys seem to have as much fun playing as any of their fans do listening.

Thursday, August 11, 6:30 p.m., $7 general admission, $5 Idaho Botanical Garden members. Bring your own picnic dinner or purchase food and drink from Garden vendors.
