Built to Spill

Boise homeboys Built to Spill grace us with their presence this Saturday at the Big Easy. Get your tickets now as they're likely to sell out by the weekend. The event is presented by the Co-op as these guys happen to be the favorite band of Co-op owner Ken Kavanagh. Kavanagh let lead singer Doug Martsch pick any local non-profit to be the beneficiary of the event, and he chose Boise's local television station, TVTV. For the few remaining locals who have no idea what sort of music they play, Built to Spill was one the most popular indie rock acts in the '90s. They masterly sort through a variety of genres, ending up somewhere between postmodern, Pavement-style pop and straight-up jam sessions. Martsch reinvented the idea of the indie guitar hero by crafting intricate webs of guitar stylings. Perhaps Boise residents should get territorial, as Built to Spill is sharing their unpredictable live act around the States, but at least they don't forget to include Boise on their lineup as they continue to achieve national recognition. Check out page 28 for a preview story on Built to Spill's opening act, Ape Shape.
