The City of Boise's long-overdue pilot project for a "Downtown Dropoff and Pickup Zone" on the south side of Main Street between Fifth and Sixth streets, is worthy of applause. During the April pilot run, the usually congested parking spots in front of businesses stretching from China Blue to Addie's were reserved from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights for pickups and drop-offs for the general public, plus taxis and transportation companies such as Lyft and Uber. Boise Police were deployed to help the flow of traffic and made sure visitors were aware that the one-block area was not a parking zone during the allotted times. Meanwhile, city officials encouraged the general public to use the same spot for pickups and drop-offs and then to find other areas to park in the downtown area.

The program came as a response to the good many taxi, Uber and Lyft drivers who had complained that they were being ticketed by BPD for illegally stopping next to parked cars, since it was nearly impossible to find spots to pull over.

All indications pointed to a successful pilot, so we can't wait for the pickup/dropoff zone to return on a permanent basis.
