Following a career-changing 2015 when she covered the role of Syvianne in the Metropolitan Opera production of The Merry Widow and appeared in other productions in New York, Virginia and Minnesota, Idaho-native Cecilia Violetta Lopez will launch 2016 with a bit of a homecoming.

Lopez should hit more than a few high notes Friday night, along with mezzo soprano Sishel Claerie as they explore their Mexican and Spanish heritages, including arrangements of Jose Pomar, Manuel Ponce, Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Maria Grever and Angel Rodriguez.

The recital is scheduled for Friday evening, January 8 at The Cathedral of the Rockies, beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and children.

Later this month, Lopez will perform in Opera Idaho's production of Verdi's La travata, January 29 and 31 at The Egyptian Theatre.

"The first time I heard opera was when I watched Sesame Street as a kid—and that's how I learned English. Sesame Street used to have opera singers make cameo appearances back then," Lopez told Marcia Franklin in a February 2015 Citizen profile, adding "It wasn't until many years later, while attending college, that her husband told her, "You should pursue a career in music. That's what you love to do. Why don't you do it?"
