Chirstmas Tree Permits

Fancy a Saturday afternoon of family wandering through snowy woods in search of the perfect Christmas tree? Boise and Payette national forests began selling Christmas tree permits just before Thanksgiving, and interested tree hunters can purchase a tag until December 24.

The cost of a permit for one tree in the Boise National Forest is $10, with a maximum tree height of 12 feet. A permit for one tree in the Payette National Forest is $5 with a maximum height of eight feet. One tree is allowed per permit and permits are limited to three per family. Permits are for personal use, and commercial sale of harvested trees is prohibited.

Permit holders are provided with maps at the time of tag purchase which detail areas of the forest that are open, closed and restricted for tree harvesting. Due to weather and road conditions, families have found themselves stranded and in danger while harvesting trees in past years. The forest service recommends that anyone planning to cut their own tree be well prepared for severe weather and emergency situations, in addition to adhering to the map's location guidelines and advising friends and family of travel intentions.
