In what has been called a "heinous" attack, police in Coeur d'Alene are investigating the stabbings of three goats doing weed reduction at a 4-acre water well site.

KREM-TV reports that animal control officers received a call alleging animal abuse in the early morning hours of July 28. When they arrived at Honeysuckle water well, owned by the city of Coeur d'Alene, police discovered that three small goats had been stabbed. One of the goats, nearly decapitated, was already dead, another was put down due to injuries from a stab wound to its back. The third goat is expected to survive.

Police said they suspect that the attackers climbed a fence to gain access to the area near the well. The goats' owners, Hayden-based Green Goat Rentals, said they placed a herd of about 16 goats in the area in the late afternoon hours of July 27. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Coeur d'Alene Police at 208-769-2320.
