Re: “Nice No More

Different strokes. I have no issue with how others live as long as they aren't hurting anyone else. I honestly don't really care about a persons politics as long as there is some base in logic. I am also indifferent to ones financial situation as long as they are not bragging or complaining about how much they have or don't have. I see that the point of neighbors went over your head. If you know "all" your neighbors, your neighborhood is quite small(my point initially) or you are not telling the truth. I realize that you felt the need to defend your way of life and your community just as I did, the difference is that I did not insult either and don't plan to. Somehow you feel the need to defend your politics, you don't. It really doesn't matter to me one way or the other. You have no idea what side of the aisle that I vote and I don't think that it is important. I'm sure there are some decent folks in San Francisco and I am sure there are some nice folks in rural Georgia as well as the North End. I am also sure there are some there are some knuckle dragging mouth breathers there as well. You asked me to admit that a lot of yahoo's live in Idaho City. I can't do that. Are there a few characteres that give the town some color? Sure. Some folks that speak their mind on both sides of the aisle, absolutley. As I know there are in the North End. I have occasionally enjoyed a cold beverage down there and people watched. I was treated no better or worse that when I have done the same in Idaho City. I think you are sadly mistaken on the definition of live and let live. "Small, remote towns tend to attract these types in the first place"? What types and what towns? Stanley, ID? Bend, OR? Maybe Stowe, VT? Park City, UT? Jackson? Crouch? Snoqualmie, WA? How about Dillon, MT or even Craig, MT? I digress. Like I said originally stop on up, let your guard down and have a laugh with/at some of the locals. You might actually see what it means to Live and Let Live. Bill

Re: “Nice No More

Unbelievable. I am humoured by Mr. Cope's unfounded opinion of Idaho City. He had to let out his frusterations on his inlaws somewhere I suppoose. What with the whole "Every one of them is a splendid representative of the human race". What a blow hard statement. Obviously the man's inlaws have no sense of humor and he placates to that. "So whatever problems that might have arisen with seven people living in a three person house, even for a few days, would not have come from them". C'mon Bill. The unbelievable part is that what Big Gear added. Mr. Big Gear has obviously not had ANY interaction with the many fine locals ,or "yahoos" as he put it, of Idaho City and the surrounding area. I feel obliged to describe and defend the lifestyle that can only be found in small towns like Idaho City. When, Mr. Big Gear, have you personally helped a neighbor (the word neighbor constitutes people that live within many miles up here)whos roof needed shoveling after a snowstorm? When is the last time you saw a motorist with 6B plates stranded and ran to the nearest town for them to pick up Fix A Flat, return and helped them on their way? How about pulling a neighbor or stranger out of the ditch in a snowstorm? I assume you know where your local fire department is, but do you know any of the fire-fighters? How about EMT's?The "yahoo's" up here rely on volunteers for our fire and EMT need and most of them can be found at any of the great establisments found in Idaho City. Certainly you give to the fire department's when they are doing the charity drives right? The "yahoo's" up here have community fund-raisers for their volunteer departments where the "yahoo's" go to support their departments and socialize with their neighbors from miles around. Do you know any of your law enforcement by name, ever had a conversation with them? How about any of employees of the Forest Service? How about your neighbors? Seriously, can you honeslty say that you have had any sort of meaningful discussion with more than one of your neighbors in the last 12 months? Does your neighborhood diner donate to your children's local school like Trudy's Kitchen? Trudy also makes sure there are eats at funerals when one of the "yahoo's" dies to help relieve some of the burden of a grieving family. No money exchanged just out of the goodness of her heart. The highway which is often littered by folks coming up to see what a dump Idaho City is, is regularly cleaned up by local "yahoo's" who receive no praise, nor pay, they do it because it is the right thing to do. Local volunteers teach the future stewards of the great outdoors how to hunt and fish responsibly doing their part to keep the populations of fish and game healthy even as the sprawl of urban life encroaches. If you choose not to come back up here, there is no skin off anyones back. If, however, you choose to give Idaho City another shot, don't worry we'll still pull you out of the ditch. There is enough intolerence in this world to go around. I only ask that you b.s with some of the locals, try some of the food, drink some of the beer, and explore around a bit it is an amazing place if you can stifle your stereotypes long enough to give it a legitimate shot. Bill cushman.bill@yahoo.com That's right I opened this "Yahoo" email account this morning especially for you. We even have a sense of humor.
