Dale Watson, Aug. 28, Grizzly Rose

Austin, Texas-based honky-tonker Dale Watson graces just one Idaho stage during a months-long tour. He's coming to one of Boise's newest juke joints, the Grizzly Rose.

Watson's voice carries with it a conversational tone, and whether he's opining on the evils of karaoke country or wondering whether he ought to be praying on bended knee to a higher power or a bottle of bourbon, it feels like he's talking directly to you.

From the top of his salt-and-pepper ducktail to the tips of his boots, Watson looks and sounds familiar. In songs like "Country My Ass"—he refers to his brand of music as Ameripolitan—he offers up the ingredients for the ideal Americana song: a great story, a deep twangy voice and a slithery pedal steel guitar. If you're at all on the fence about seeing the show, watch the live video of Watson performing "Country" on YouTube. The look on his face and the tone in his voice when a waitress passes him by with a tray of cocktails shows Watson also understands the value of a sense of humor and how great a show can be when a performer is having as much fun—and as much whiskey—as the audience.

Aug 28., 8 p.m., 21 and older only, $15 adv., $18 door. Grizzly Rose, 1124 Front St., 208-342-3375. Tickets available at the Record Exchange and Boise Co-op.
