Re: “Idaho Senate Passes Bill Favoring Faith-Based University Clubs

The issue is not, as Senator Stennett suggests, that religious groups would elect leaders who do not share their beliefs (what an extraordinary exercise in missing the point, Senator!). The crux of the matter is that religious groups were told by campus administrators that they could not require that their leaders actually assent to the doctrines of their faith. I'm surprised that anyone, whether liberal or conservative, would think it a good idea that government employees should determine how faith-based groups elect their leaders. Far from carving out some mythical special privilege for religious groups, this legislation bans state interference with the freedom of religion. And that is a good thing.
