Re: “Dear, Dear Andy

It's 6 days after the election and I finally got around to reading Bill Cope's piece about Andy Hedden-Nicely's run for US Congress. For most of the 90's Andy used to fry me alive in the BW's pages. Never met me. I never met him. Yet, it would be proper to say that there was a disrespect from and to both of us. Then, a mutual friend introduced us in 2002. And we hit it off. I consider Andy one of my best friends now. To then read Bill Cope's pathetic piece about Andy and his race for US Congress makes me wonder if Bill was ever a friend to Andy and Debi. Calling me whatever his gin-soaked keyboard could conjure up is one thing, yet his attack against Andy harkens me back to the days of Andy's vivisecting of me...hmmm...could it be that Bill Cope may not know me? Maybe it's far fairer to realize that I do not know him. Maybe it's equally good for all of us to realize that demonizing each other leads to nothing productive. Nothing. Bill Cope believes he is an open, fair liberal. A Hemingway-of-sorts without Cuba. Maybe he is. His writing has a tinge of vinegar that reminds me of some tough old writers. So, maybe Bill Cope is open enough to meet a conservative as a person, you know - be open and available. Let's put him to the test. BW - ask Bill to have 2 lunches with me. The first one to get to know each other and the next to have one of your writers present to report on the follow up talk. Interested, Mr. Cope? I am. Dennis Mansfield
