I really hope the above comment was a genuine suggestion and not an exploitation of a devasting crime for commercial gain. Ultimately, regardless of self defense training or any other variables, if you survived to report a rape - you did everything right! And, you were a victim of a crime that can happen to anyone; no matter how prepared they think you are; how they dress; where they walk; etc. Can we all do things to limit the possibility of a rape occuring? Sure, for starters we can watch out for each other, and hold rapists accountable for for their actions. Safety tips are a great idea to help us all make it harder for any criminals to act. They should be posted and spoken of on a regular basis as part creating an overall culture of respect and dignity that is intolerant of sexual violence, hate crimes, etc. However, when the list of safety tips is tacked on to the press report of the rape, it illustrates a persistent culture of victim blaming that, albeit unintenionally, serves to perpetuate the false idea that the crime of rape only happens when victims are being "unsafe".
