Re: “Uphill Battle: Proposed Scotchman Peaks Wilderness Area Grows Controversy

The author of this article has emphasized controversy in telling this story. No doubt that makes for a more interesting story, but it does not represent the local reality very well. The Scotchmans Wilderness proposal has earned a very large number of endorsements from a wide variety of community groups, and elected officials. See our website at The group has also attracted personal support from well over 4000 individuals. It is fair to say that the great majority of local residents do not see protection of the wild Scotchmans as any kind of threat to local economic development, and in fact do see protecting this landscape as a way to make sure we retain some of the values that appeal to so many of us. There is a common sense point of view, widely held in our three county area, that it makes sense to both protect the wild Scotchmans, and also to manage productive forest lands for commodity production. -Doug Ferrell, Montana Coordinator, FSPW
