Feds Pull Plug on Chomo Channel

If you felt a little more thankful than usual on Thanksgiving, it could have been because the previous day, a local child molester who had been running an international peer-to-peer file-sharing Web site by the name of "Kid Sex and Incest" was convicted in federal court.

Jerry Banks, 53, had previously served 12 years in the Idaho State Penitentiary for molesting an 11-year old, but was discharged in 2002. Since getting out, prosecutors said, he has spent a goodly chunk of his time continuing to distribute and trade pictures of prepubescent minors with like-minded individuals.

But Banks' conviction is significant for more reasons than just to take his personal collection out of circulation. His capture was just the latest development in an investigation that first began last year when a woman in Canada overheard two children having a conversation about the local man who had molested them. Police arrested the man, seized his sizeable pornography collection and then assumed his identity in online chat rooms for nearly two months afterward, according to the Canadian National Post. The resulting probe has produced more than 60 arrests in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Europe and Australia, and, according to Det. Randy Wickins of the Edmonton Police, has freed more than 20 children from situations where they were being sexually exploited.

Banks is scheduled to be sentenced on March 9, 2007, and faces a mandatory life sentence.
