Festival Organizers Nix Story Story Night from Storyfort Over Launch Party Controversy

  • Treefort Music Fest/Storyfort

Treefort Music Fest organizers removed Story Story Night from the Storyfort lineup March 10 after controversy erupted over a story told at the event's launch party March 7.

"A piece of content during the launch party didn't reflect Treefort's values," said Treefort organizer Drew Lorona in a text message. "Specifically working toward making Boise's artistic community stronger and more inclusive. As a result, we felt it was better to remove that content from the festival and explore other options."

During her segment at the launch party, Story Story Night co-founder Jessica Holmes told a story that included details about an alleged sexual assault, as well as the name of the victim. While Holmes said she regretted revealing the first name of the alleged victim, she also said she felt she "didn't expose anything that was really private."

"I feel unburdened," Holmes said. "I'll take my hits."

Following Holmes' appearance at the launch party, Storyfort issued an apology via Facebook and stakeholders met with Treefort Music Fest organizers to discuss both the blowback and the Storyfort event Holmes was set to host, Story Story Storyfort-Exposed.

As a result, it was decided SSN should be removed from the Treefort lineup. Storyfort organizer Christian Winn broke the news to Holmes.

"It's unfortunate," he said. "We want this to be a safe place to bring artists."

Nevertheless, Winn said he didn't believe Holmes' story "was malicious in any way," and Treefort's decision to remove SSN left him conflicted.

"If it were my event exclusively, I'm not sure what I would have done," he said.

Winn said a decision on what will fill SSN's time slot during Storyfort is forthcoming.
