Fishbone: Still Stuck In Your Throat

Last things first: Fishbone's latest release closes with a cover of Sublime's "Date Rape." Like the bulk of the album, it's a barn-burner in true Fishbone fashion. Despite their age and the fact that it's been six years since we've heard from these So-Cal madmen, they show no signs of slowing down. The howling, saxophone playing, theremin-wielding Angelo Moore's raspy spitfire vocals are set ablaze by horns, metal guitars, organs, theremin and super-duper basslines from Fishbone co-founder Norwood Fisher. Still Stuck In Your Throat has some amazing guitar work by Rocky George from Suicidal Tendencies.

On the surface, SSIYT is more visceral than cerebral. Endorphins and adrenaline are delivered immediately. Look past that and you'll remember that Moore's a rabble-rouser. His social, political and spiritual messages are delivered with severity. Existing fans will be glad to hear he still very much wants to provoke the world with lovable Moore lines like "Excuse me, am I tripping over your ego or mine?"

The funk-metal sound has been bastardized so much over the last two decades. Fans who are increasingly disappointed with each of these releases owe it to themselves to hear this album. Fishbone is here to remind the younger generation about the scene they helped form. If you've got an ounce of soul, you'll have a hard time keeping still, keeping sane and keeping your clothes on with this album playing anywhere in earshot.
