Re: “Step One: Do The Dirty

I wonder what effect the book 'The Boys of Boise' had on Larry Craig, who was, I think, a teenager, probably about 18, when it came out in the early 1960s. It was a nationwide best-seller. It must have influenced him profoundly - in some ways - and this is not as pretentious as it sounds - similar to the way the Oscar Wilde scandal (1895) influenced Somerset Maugham (born 1874.) When a thing like that, from your own area, gains prominence and casts a shadow, the shadow stays with you for the rest of your life. I would be interested to hear comments on this from Idaho people of a certain age. I am from Wisconsin, born in 1951, and the book influenced me - even though I did not read it to till the 1980s. The book, like 1960s-era items in "Time" and "Newsweek" about 'the plight of the homosexual' , served to present the world of sex among men as something sordid, shadowy, but somehow alluring and enticing.
