Take the high road.

For some, getting out of bed on New Year's Day is challenge enough. For the more hardy among us, Jan. 1, 2016 is a day for feats of strength far beyond mixing bloody marys and sucking down eggs Benedict. The eighth annual Frozen Stones Highland Challenge, hosted by the Scottish American Athletic Association, is about as hard-core as it gets, with traditional Highland competitions like the caber toss and hammer throw—kilt-lifting weather be damned.

More than 40 athletes have already preregistered, many ranked by the SAAA, which sanctions Highland sports nationwide, promising a spirited day of cold weather competition 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Gem Island Sports Complex in Emmett. For spectators, there will be food, drink and fire pits to welcome the new year Scottish style.
