Gem State Jam, July 19, Idaho Expo

As summer begins, I really look forward to all of the music options happening in and around the valley. Mid-stride, I'm a little concerned that, with so many choices, there just aren't enough patrons to go around for each event—especially the worthy ones—to be a success. By the end of summer, just the mention of the words "music" or "festival" in the same sentence gives me a headache.

But there is a festival happening soon with one thing going for it that none of the others have: G Square Productions' inaugural Gem State Jam arts and music festival has Built To Spill headlining.

Readying for a couple of months of East Coast and European shows in which the band will play their 1997 album Perfect From Now On in its entirety at each show—which includes taking some time to get everyone back up to speed on those songs—it seemed a little odd that Built To Spill would effectively start the whole thing off with a show at the Idaho Expo. BTS frontman Doug Martsch says, simply, they got a call from their agent asking if they were interested. The band didn't know anything about the festival or who's putting it on, but Martsch says, "It sounded like a really cool thing to us, to be able to play an outdoor, all-ages thing and be part of a Boise festival." Though he adds that he doesn't think they'll play any of the songs from Perfect.

"It will be our last chance to not play those songs [for awhile]," he says, laughing.

July 19 with Blue Monsoon, Blue Turtle Seduction, Kamphire Collective, Juju Revolution, Jerry Fee, Rebecca Scott, Kris Doty, $25, noon. Idaho Expo, 5610 N. Glenwood, gemstatejam.com.
