I'm not making this post to address the content of the article, which is - by the way - extremely well written, but to provide encouragement to you to just do it. Smoke that last cigarette and then go crawl the walls for a few days. With each passing day, cigarettes will become less and less important to you. I say that as a quitter who smoked for 26 years. Just like you, I hung onto my habit because I WANTED it. Quitting seemed impossible. I can't tell you where I got the willpower to do so because I'm as weak as can be over such things, but I did it, cold turkey and could measure my progress in two's. Two days (the worst - absolute pain and agony.) Two weeks - shaky ground, always had one foot out the door to go buy a pack. I chewed sugarless gum until my jaws hurt. And then two months. After that I was home free and now, it's been close to ten years since I quit. People told me I would always want a cigarette, but that's not true. After a few months, I rarely even thought about a cigarette (something I didn't dream possible.) If I did have an occasional thought about them, it was on the same par as a desire for a chocolate chip cookie. Fleeting and easy to dismiss. But here is the most important point I want to share with you, or any potential quitter. Please know that the I'll-never-smile-again depression that comes over you the first couple of days -- you'll know what I mean, like you've lost your best friend or an appendage or something. That feeling is TEMPORARY. You will return to laughing and socializing and enjoying life in just a matter of days. I promise.
