Gig of the Week

Deana Carter at Wal-Mart, October 4

It's not often that BW recommends a Gig of the Week where (1) the artist is not local and (2) the alleged gig is at a Wal-Mart. But c'mon: a country music superstar comes to one of our Wal-Marts for a performance and autograph signing? It's too perfect--how can we not shout it from the rooftops? Besides, when the Music Mama's away, the skeleton staff will play. We'll teach her to leave us in charge.

Deana Carter is a multi-platinum recording artist whose debut album, Did I Shave My Legs For This?, was released in 1996. Her latest release and the album she's touring to support, The Story of My Life, came out last spring.

The current Wal-Mart Tour, of which Carter is a part, is a chance for country music fans to attend free parking-lot shows by up-and-coming performers. "Low prices guaranteed," indeed. A joke about country music fans, Wal-Mart frequenters and the ensuing sliiim Venn diagram comes to mind, but we'll try to keep our latent music and grocery snobbery in check.

Which makes the following tough to report: Besides the Wal-Mart appearances, Carter will also appear on an upcoming episode of Jeff Foxworthy's Blue Collar TV. (Must! Suppress! Smart-ass! Comment!) Can a NASCAR appearance be far behind? (Couldn't do it.)

All snottiness aside, Carter has a sweet, airy singing voice and her style--modern country music with a highly developed pop sensibility--is inoffensive lite-FM stuff. (Although we did cringe a little at her Kurt Cobain reference in "One Day At a Time.") Plus, how often do you get to see a free concert in a Wal-Mart parking lot?

The tour schedule posted online at indicates that the Carter's band isn't scheduled to make an official stop in Boise--meaning that this is the one chance for both fans and sociological fieldtrippers to catch her here.

Oct. 4, 6 p.m., FREE, Wal-Mart, 4051 E. Fairview, Meridian.
