Re: “New Bike Lanes And Boxes Make Debut on Capitol Blvd., Main And Idaho Streets

I own a business downtown and am there almost daily. While I want a safer Boise, I'm not sure this helps. With larger cars, some cyclists are nearly invisible. Add in some speed and an Idaho stop, and you get the near miss that happened just the other day to me.

There have been times in my life where I've been car-less. The only time I was hit - in Redding, CA - was my fault while riding against traffic on a one-way street.

Also, I know that when my daughter was still in a carseat I preferred getting her from the curb. My clients with young kids feel the same way.

If we're keeping this bike lane format, cyclists need to be wary of being in blind spots. Don't feel "safe" because your away from traffic as a passenger door might be flung open by a child. Don't trust that a driver saw you behind a large truck or SUV. Slow down.

I'm going to admit, too, that anything that takes more parking from my clients will always be seen as a negative to me.
