Good Thyme Grille - Walla Walla Wine Fete - The Orchard House

Which 'Wich is Which?

Meridian has a new sandwich stop offering a serious benny for your pocketbook: a nothing-over-$7 menu. Good Thyme Grille opened about a month ago in downtown Meridian and after looking at the photos on the grille's Web site, under $7 looks like an even better deal. Rather than cafeteria deli-style surroundings, the place definitely has a smoother touch to it, which means when the menu talks about gourmet sandwiches and salads, gourmet is no joke. Just about everything is made in house, from the lemon bars and cheesecake to the potato salad and chili. On the menu, you'll find build-your-own options or speciality items, some of which are named after Meridian landmarks, like "the water tower" or "the speedway," which is a grilled pastrami and corned beef on rye.

Of note: Good Thyme Grille does dinner (and serves beer and wine to make it feel more official) and through Dec. 21 will host the Good Thyme, Good Heart food drive to benefit the Idaho Foodbank. Catering options are also available, whether you're in search of sandwiches for the office or something more serious for a dinner party.

A Little Light in Your Life

A new restaurant in the Sunnyslope area is getting outside for the pre-holiday festivities. Wednesday and Sunday nights through Dec. 21, the Orchard House Restaurant hosts a holiday party, with a walking path of lights, entertainment, shopping and pictures with Santa. Have pastries and a hot libation or grab a dog and fries from the holiday cafe and gift shop while the kids say cheese with Santa. Bring a non-perishable food item for the food drive supporting Love INC. The Orchard House serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, running the gamut of the day's food groups from omelets and pancakes to burgers and sandwiches to family style dinners with prime rib, salmon, chicken or vegetarian dishes.

This Week's Wine and Dine

In search of a little out-of-town extravagance this weekend? Here's just the splurge. The third annual Walla Walla Winemakers' Fete is this weekend in Washington. Put on by the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance and the Carnegie Art Center, the fete kicks off the annual holiday barrel tasting. Setting formalities aside, seating is by the draw of a name. Attendees may find themselves seated at a table with one of the valley's well-established winemakers or they may get to meet the new faces. Price is a whopping $150 per person, but the fee is all-inclusive. If barrel tasting rather than wining and dining is more your speed, holiday barrel tasting happens Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Winemakers' Fete is Thursday, Dec. 4, 6-10:30 p.m. For reservations or more information on the fete or the weekend's tastings, call 509-526-3117 or visit
