Gun Makers Protectionism

In an amazing act of support for one of the most powerful lobbying groups on the planet, the Senate passed legislation which would protect gun makers from lawsuits filed for damages resulting from the illegal use of guns. A Democratic amendment to include child safety locks with every handgun sale passed, too. The bill is expected to easily pass in the House of Representatives sometime in September, but not with the child safety amendment.

It is interesting that it wasn't individuals filing the lawsuits, it was city and county governments suffering from massive urban gun violence where gun manufacturers heavily market handguns. They say setting aside an entire industry from prosecution may give gun manufacturers a free pass to do whatever they want.

Stock prices for handgun makers like Smith & Wesson rose by up to 25 percent with the news. You can bet that a portion of those profits will be earmarked for more lobbying.
