Re: “Kenyans Line Up for Circumcision

It is a pity that those posting here have so little understanding of epidemiology or the biological rationale behind male circumcision. The three randomized controlled trials that were performed in Uganda, Kenya and South Africa are considered the "gold standard" of research and highly regarded internationally. All threes studies found similar results, though they were conducted by different research teams - a 60% reduction in HIV transmission. This is why the WHO supports the provision of male circumcision in Southern African countries where MC prevalence is low and HIV prevalence is high.

There is no 'magic bullet' in the fight against HIV, but we need every approach at our disposal that we know can contribute. It is very easy to reject something new, and concoct conspiracy theories to justify our fear. Male circumcision may be scary, but it works. Condoms are effective, but in Africa HIV is in the bedroom - most transmissions are among married or cohabitating partners, and people don't use condoms consistently with trusted partners. Circumcision is not perfect, but it is consistent - it is always there, even when a man is drunk or trusts his partner too much to use a condom.
