Heibarger, May 2, The Bouquet

Swing a dead cat in this town and you might hit a hesher (one who fancies metal music). Not that there's anything wrong with that. Unless you were raised in a cave or raised by nuns, or worse yet, raised in a cave by nuns, metal music probably provided the soundtrack to at least one of your outrageous teenage adventures. One problem with metal, and some of the people making it, is those people feel teenage escapades were the only ones that matter and they make music that isn't just reminiscent of days gone by but exactly like it. As with anything, if metal doesn't change, it ends up mired in the past and soon, the only people listening to or making the music will just be a bunch of old dudes with mullets wearing acid-wash jeans.

Local band Heibarger makes metal with a healthy dose of rock, a sense of adventure and a nod to the difference between making a song and just making sound. The last time I saw them perform live was during a band battle, and though they played longer than their allotted time and frontman Chris Heibarger managed to drink more than his allotted share, they rocked hard enough and tight enough to win the metal round.

With a new dark, groovy self-titled debut on shelves, Heibarger has been receiving fan accolades and shows promise of staying ahead of the metal curve without falling victim to big-hair power-ballad obscurity.

May 2 with Yexotay, 8 p.m., $2. The Bouquet, 1010 Main St., 208-343-6605.
