Re: “Alive After Five Backlash

First of all, I would like to say that there is a lot more going on in Boise than "a bunch of acoustic guitarists with loop stations". If that's all this person hears, then it might speak to the fact that local musicians are being paid essentially the same as they have for the last thirty years! That is no exaggeration. As for the DBA offering something "new and different after 19 years", I read that as slapping a venerable Boise tradition in the face. It seems to me that Boise's growth ensures that something musically new and different is constantly being generated at the local level. Did the audience ask for a change in favor of non-local acts? Are these non-local bands actually producing more revenue in food and beverage sales at AA5 than their local counterparts did? I support the comment that there should be more local venues that provide free local entertainment to all ages, which includes not only those under legal age, but also those who are over that twenty-to-thirty-something window and don't feel comfortable going into bars. There are also those who, for whatever reason, choose not to go into bars at all. Just because they don't go in bars doesn't mean they don't like music and wouldn't come to AA5 to hear and support their musician friend or family member. Boise is getting large and diverse enough that the needs of all it's demographic groups ought to be considered. But it seems lately that the DBA has looked the other way. If you say you're going to mix it up, then MIX IT UP!, but do so in favor of local talent, not in spite of it.
