Hot Buttered Rum and The Waybacks, Feb. 27, The Egyptian

Not unlike some emo bands, jam bands have a propensity for odd monikers. San Francisco-based Hot Buttered Rum joins the ranks of The Grateful Dead, Phish, The Yonder Mountain String Band and The String Cheese Incident in offering up a name that, though it doesn't literally identify the kind of music, upon hearing the moniker, you're likely to guess the genre correctly.

Hot Buttered Rum has spent the last few years honing their bluegrass/folk sound and touring nonstop, allowing fans of every walk to see them in electric arena settings, festivals and smaller, more intimate venues. The band is currently out in support of Live in the Northwest, their "first live album that features the entire band," and is cruising from city to city, state to state in a vehicle packed with the instruments that have given them their unique, homegrown sound—flute, mandolin and accordion, to name a few—and that runs on vegetable oil. Natch.

Joining HBR are their Bay Area brethren, The Waybacks. Another band with a bluegrass bent, The Waybacks reach way back, bringing a 1940s sensibility to their sound, wrapping it all up in a country package. On their 2006 release, From the Pasture to the Future, deep bleats of the tuba, gospel-borne keyboards and flirtatious fiddle all combine to make a rich tapestry of sound that will have old and new fans alike enjoying the music and asking, "So, what's in a name?"

Wed., Feb. 27, 7:30 p.m., $20-$22 adv., $24 at the door. The Egyptian Theatre, 700 W. Main St., 208-387-1273,
