Idaho is haunting. From towering mountains lit by glittering stars to the glassy facades of Boise’s new buildings, Idaho is full of contradictions. Sometimes those contradictions drive people away, but once an Idahoan, always an Idahoan—just ask Boise-based Americana musician Eilen Jewell, who returned with her husband to the Gem State in 2012, eventually heading to her family's place in Idaho City.

"It's a ghost town, essentially," Jewell said in a May 2015 interview with NPR. "I mean, that's how it's listed on the map. It's about as Western as it gets."

It was there Jewell worked on her most recent album, Sundown Over Ghost Town (Signature Sounds, 2015), a testament to Idaho and the West’s place in her heart.

“That’s really where my thoughts have been for the past… well, forever, really,” she said in a 2015 Boise Weekly interview.

At her upcoming show at Cinder Winery, Jewell will perform songs from each of her five studio albums, including Sundown. Although the show is currently sold out, there's always the possibility of another contradiction: Maybe someone will change his or her mind about going.
