Idaho Health Officials Say E. Coli Infections, Hospitalizations Tied to Pre-chopped Romaine Lettuce

Health officials say at least eight Idahoans have come down with E. coli infections after eating pre-chopped romaine lettuce. Three individuals were hospitalized, and two of the three have developed kidney failure. All hospitalized individuals were adults between the ages of 20 and 55. No deaths have yet been linked to the recent outbreak.

Initial investigations by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention indicate that the contamination likely came from chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona, growing region. No common grower, supplier, distributor or brand has been identified yet. The chopped romaine lettuce in question was consumed at restaurants and in private homes.

Officials at the Idaho Division of Public Health and multiple Idaho public health districts are advising people who have pre-chopped romaine lettuce from Yuma or an unknown source to throw it out, even if they have previously consumed the romaine without becoming ill.

The CDC confirms that there have been at least 35 cases of E. coli infections in 11 states tied to the pre-chopped romaine lettuce thus far.
