An eastern Idaho junior high school teacher who attracted national media attention for reportedly feeding a puppy to a snapping turtle has been charged with animal cruelty, a misdemeanor. East Idaho News reports that Preston Junior High School educator Robert Crosland was officially charged in Franklin County Court following an investigation by the Idaho Attorney General's office. If convicted, Crosland faces a possible $5,000 fine and/or up to six months in jail. An initial court date has not yet been scheduled.

Officials of the Preston School District said in March that they had become aware of a "regrettable circumstance involving some of the biological specimens" and that the incident "occurred well after students had been dismissed and was not part of any school-directed program."

Authorities ultimately siezed the turtle and the Idaho Department of Agriculture announced a few days later that the turtle had been "humanely euthanized" because it was considered to be an invasive species.

The incident triggered a regional debate with some calling for criminal charges against the teacher while a "We Support Crosland" petition garnered more than 3,700 signatures.
