I'm Naut What I Seem: Helen Stellar

Five songs? With this release from Helen Stellar, I'm Naut What I Seem, that's all you get. If I'd paid for this disc, I'd be looking for enough green to buy more. Since I'm getting paid to do this, hey, bonus for me this week.

But you want to know about the disc, right? Damn right you do. The band takes a wall-of-sound approach to guitar pop, smacking you in the face with jangly guitar riffs and forceful drumming right from track one, the lovely and aptly named "The Opening Credits." Never overbearing, the instruments blend well with the plaintive singing of Jim Evens, creating moody but not maudlin songs. Some bands wallow in depressive sounds; Helen Stellar skirts that trap.

After listening to bands that think three minutes is epic, it's also nice to hear music that doesn't feel rushed. Only one of the songs on this fine EP is under four minutes, giving an impression of space and melody much greater than 23 minutes would suggest. At times evoking bands like Porcupine Tree and Halloween, Alaska, this EP suggests a band worth watching. Head over to Neurolux on July 20, pony up some cash and see for yourself.
