Isn't That Jesus Over There?

At a time when journalism — local and national — is bound to the unfortunate task of portraying the randomness and brutality of death, it's heartening to hear of citizens putting their bad-news-fixation and paranoia to use for the public good.

Last Saturday a trio of as-of-yet-unnamed citizens driving through Garden City followed a maroon Mitsubishi Galant after recalling media descriptions linking a similar vehicle to 26-year-old Fernando Leon Bayesteros, who was strangled and stabbed to death in his Bench apartment last Friday. According to police spokeswoman Lynn Hightower, one of the three trackers drove, another directed, and a third relayed the chase to 911 dispatchers. Even more amazing than that they pulled it off, though, was that the group's hunch was right on. Within minutes, officers swarmed the area and nabbed the car's driver and sole occupant, 20-year-old Mexican national Jesus Sanchez. He was charged with grand theft, at a bail of $1 million. He is a "person of interest" in the homicide, but had not been charged as of press time.
