An interesting fact I heard earlier this week. In order to have the average per capita (for the US) number of psychiatrists, Idaho has to recruit 142. 142! It has taken months for State Hospital North (in Orofino) to recruit one. The regional full service hospital and the outpatient practices have been recruiting for years.

We can never fill that hole. What this means is that we cannot deliver behavioral health services in the standard manner, and need to be creative with scope of practice, types of services and reimbursement strategies. And cannot use "numbers of providers" as an indication of system performance. We need real data on system performance and, it is undeniable, greater resources.
