Re: “Luna, IEA, Idaho Reporter in a Tweet-Off

George, thanks for the post. To help clarify for Justin, here's our tweet in reply to Dustin's query: "But is the point of our schools to provide jobs or to educate our kids?"

"@DustinHurst Absolutely, our children's education is the point. But it's foolish to discount education jobs' impact on Idaho economy."

Also: The IEA is named the IEA because our members include teachers but other school employees, too, including some classroom assistants, counselors, bus drivers, janitors, and cafeteria workers. Together, we work for the personal and professional well-being of Idaho public school employees and the vision of a great public school for every child.

Finally, I'll make clear that as the one-person communications department at the IEA, my portfolio includes the Twitter feed. I don't try to speak for the entire organization; my tweets reflect past statements and decisions made by the organization and supporters of public education, including the 77K+ Idahoans who agreed to put the new laws to the referendums next year.

Re: “Organizers Looking to Overturn Education Overhaul Say They Have Half of Necessary Signatures

The referendum campaign needs about 48,000 signatures on each of three petitions but is shooting for 60K on each, so 30K is about halfway. If that threshold is met, the laws will go to a vote of the people in November 2012

You have the figures correct for the much higher recall threshold, but if that benchmark is met, the recall election would be held this year.

The Committee to Recall Tom Luna is spearheading the recall effort, as its name indicates. Idahoans for Responsible Education Reform is focusing on overturning the bad laws.

Re: “Organizers Looking to Overturn Education Overhaul Say They Have Half of Necessary Signatures

Uh, George, this isn't the recall effort. It's the referendum campaign to overturn the three education overhaul laws passed by the Legislature. You seem to be combining the two campaigns here.

Re: “Mail and Commentary October 27, 2010

Thanks, BW, for running my letter. As soon as I got on your site to look for it, I ran into an ad from K12, the online, for-profit education company that has the taxpayer-funded Idaho Virtual Academy contract. K12 has been advertising aggressively to poach students from our neighborhood schools. What a way to prove the point in my last sentence!

People interested in reading more about K12 may enjoy a commentary I wrote last week at Facebook. I'd suggest reading it before Election Day! But it'd also be a good story for an interpid BW reporter to look into post-November 2 ... say, when the Idaho Legislature is looking for more ways to slash school funding during the Ides of March.

Re: “Talking Shit About Boise

Spokane has more branch libraries and a waaaaaaay better transit system than Boise. Other than that ...
