Re: “Waiting for Superman

The film maker, Davis Guggenheim's success appears to be due to his use of sensationalism, leaving out meaningful truths, and simplifying a very complex challenge by blaming the teacher's union. In today's "Tea Party" climate, the masses have a feeding frenzy in response to the trash talking.

I am a retired Ohio public school teacher, who was dedicated to my students' learning and to engaging them in the process. I loved my teaching experience, even in my 30th year. I taught in a large district. The families served by our staff had a 93% poverty rate (not district-wide, but in our building). Many of our kids went home through dangerous crime-ridden neighborhoods, and some kids, to homes in which the parents struggled with drug problems. The list of our challenges was very long.

Tenure had to be EARNED with 3-5 years of effective teaching and supervision, in addition to many hours of continuing professional education. Tenure is a tool to ensure that when termination is necessary, it is done for just cause. However in my 30 years, I witnessed effective principals terminate ineffective teachers, even with tenure.

Without the union, teachers would be systematically eliminated as quickly as their pay reached a level that didn't "fit" the budget goals. This will result in even fewer people choosing to become educators, as it could not be a LIFE-long career. When the union works toward limiting class size, it is because the teaching and learning will be more effective.

If the union really were the negative force portrayed by some, I would also not approve. I have seen the union up close and personal, and it is not as our detractors portray.
